There have been quite a lot of comments going back and forth surrounding the recent launch of the 2013 Proton Suprima S. While there are many who love it for its affordability and high equipment levels, there are equally those who despise it – maybe even more so who don’t appreciate the new Proton hatchback, than those who do.
Armed with our cameras, we took to the floor of the Suprima S launch event with our video cameras, and went around asking everyone who wasn’t shy enough to appear on camera, just what they thought of the new car.
Some favoured the Proton Suprima S – saying that it featured loads of goodies inside and just how good it looks. Others? Not so much it seems.
After getting back from the launch event of the Suprima S on Saturday, we were quite surprised to see just how many negative comments it received on our Facebook page, which you can view at the hyperlink.

It’s funny how Proton benchmarked the handling of the Suprima S against two foreign make hatchbacks, without benchmarking their build quality. The Preve handled well, and I suppose the Suprima would follow suit, but it needs better build quality and higher-quality components to win buyers.

Good handling is not something new to Proton. They owned Lotus for so long and that is the least they could have learned from that legendary car company - fortunately they did.
But what Proton needs to do now (actually, three models ago) is to benchmark themselves for quality, reliability and packaging.

Having experienced the Preve, there is little to doubt about the Suprima S's handling prowess. On paper, the Suprima S offers very good value for money. However, the new hatchback is more of a car that Proton wants, but not a car that Proton needs.
When the Nissan Almera was introduced, it was not the Vios that was the hardest hit, but the Preve – never mind the fact that the Almera sits one segment lower. What does that tell you? Buyers are willing to trade ‘Lotus Ride and Handling’ for pragmatic aspects like trustworthiness. Why set lofty goals of benchmarking against the best from Europe, when it is already having trouble fending off competition from less glamorous entry-level Japanese sedans?
Also, the CamPro series engine featured in the Suprima S does not comply with the latest Euro 6 emission standards, which will be enforced in Europe starting September 2014. So again, what is the rationale behind benchmarking against European makes, if the car can not even be exported to European markets?

It’s not the most ‘well-received’ car, is it? So many negative comments have been made about the new Suprima S since it was launched – and I’m keen to agree. As a car born of passion, quality and global ambition, the new Proton hatch falls far too short. However, from a business perspective in favour of its makers, the Suprima S somewhat nails it. For all its features and equipment, it ought to sell well enough. As much as there are complaints about it, it won’t be long before we start seeing these cars all over the road. But therein lies my difficulty with the Suprima S – it’s just good business.

KUALA LUMPUR: The launch of Proton Suprima S will hopefully correct the public perception that the local car manufacturer produces sub-standard cars, said Proton adviser Tun Dr Mahathir Moham-ad.
This is necessary because Proton manufactures cars that meet international standards, he said.
“I hope the perception that Proton produces cheap, low quality cars will be corrected because Proton cars are of the same standard as other famous car manufacturers,” he said at the launch of Suprima S at the Malaysian External Trade Development Corpo-ration (Matrade) Convention Centre here yesterday.
Suprima S is Proton’s first “hatchback” model fitted with safety features such as six airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC).
Dr Mahathir said the Suprima S was designed to attract the younger set of buyers who were keen on the hatchback as it is more sporty than the sedan.
Suprima S is available at all Proton showrooms nationwide with prices starting from RM76,338 for the Executive model and RM79,638 for the Premium model.
Public Land Transport Commission chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, who was also present at the ceremony, was announced as the first buyer of the Suprima S.
Also present were Dr Mahathir’s wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali and Proton executive chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: National car company Proton unveiled its latest model, the Proton Suprima S, on Saturday.

The new hatchback was unveiled at the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre by Proton group advisor, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was accompanied by Proton executive chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil and Proton deputy chief executive officer Datuk Lukman Ibrahim.

The Proton Suprima S is available in two variants. The Executive variant is priced from RM76,638 while the Premium is priced from RM79,638 on-the-road in Peninsular Malaysia.

The Premium variant offers features new to Proton models, such as the Proton Infotainment with an Android-based operating system, rear LED guide lights, Hill-Hold assist, and Park Assist with front parking sensors.

The Proton Suprima S is powered by Proton's 1.6L Turbo engine, produces 140 PS at 5000rpm, with a maximum torque of 205Nm from 2000 to 4000rpm.

It is available for sale immediately and can be test driven at all Proton authorized showrooms nationwide, and five colour choices of Fire Red, Tranquility Black, Solid White, Genetic Silver and Atlantic Blue.

Former Home Minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar was the first to buy the new hatchback in blue.

"I didn't even know I was the first customer. During the launch, I told Tun Dr Mahathir it was a beautiful car, and he said I could buy it and get it delivered immediately. So I did just that!" said Syed.

Proton's new Suprima S launched, price starts at RM76,338 (RM78,338 in Sabah)

Proton is expecting to correct the public perception that the local car manufacturer produces sub standard cars with the launch of its latest offering, the Proton Suprima S.

Proton says that this car is RM40,000 cheaper than other makes in the same class. This puts the Suprima S (by Proton's own words) in the same league with Honda Civic, Toyota Altis, Ford Focus and Nissan Sylphy, which are priced around RM115,000 to RM120,000.

For comparison, the RM89,000 Kia Forte is known to be in the same segment as Civic, Altis and the peers.

Ok, I know the Suprima S is a hatchback, but yes, price-wise - that's what Proton is saying.

The Suprima S looks exactly the same as the Preve, except that it is a hatchback.


In Peninsula Malaysia, on-the-road selling price for the Proton Suprima S, which comes with a five-year warranty and five-year free road assist programme, is as follows:

You have every reason to be pissed off if you've been expecting a similar pricing in Sabah. In Kota Kinabalu area, you are slapped with a RM2,000 'premium' compared to those in West Malaysia:

Suprima S is Proton's first 'hatchback' model fitted with high safety features such as ABS with EBD, brake assist, electronic stability control (ESC), traction control and two rear Isofix mounts. Both Suprima S variants are equipped with six airbags - front, side and curtain.

Five colours are available for the Proton Suprima S, these being Atlantic Blue, Fire Red, Genetic Silver, Tranquility Black and Solid White.

KUALA LUMPUR: The newly launched Proton Suprima S is poised to be the "game changer" in improving the standards and qualities in the national carmaker's cars and changing public perception on Proton, Hong Leong Investment Bank said today. 
It said the launching of Suprima S would enhance Proton's product range offerings and help to regain back market confidence and market share.
"We expect Suprima S to receive positive response from the public, similar to the previous launch of Saga SV in mid-June, which has received over 20,000 orders," said the investment bank in a note. 
The new Proton variant priced between RM76,000 and RM80,000 and has successfully obtained Australasian New Car Assessment Programme rating of five stars and claimed to be superior to other same class hatchbacks available in Malaysia market, which are priced above RM120,000.
The bank maintained "buy" rating on DRB-Hicom with unchanged target price of RM3.36 based on 20 per cent discount to sum-of-parts valuation. - Bernama

THE third quarter of the year is almost over, and while some Malaysians were eagerly awaiting the beginning of the latest English Premier League season, many were excited about the launch of Proton's latest model, the Suprima S.
It was strange for Proton to launch the Suprima S now, as Malaysians are expecting cars that are cheaper than what are available in the market, thanks to the government's promise to reduce car prices.
While there were mixed reviews from the public regarding the Suprima S' price of about RM80,000, we wanted to find out if the Preve's sportier sibling is worth its price tag, and if it is relatively cheaper than other models in its class.
Thanks to Proton, we managed to get our hands on the Suprima S 1.6 Premium and gave it a go at the company's closed semi high-speed test track in Shah Alam.
According to Proton, the Suprima S is a C-segment model, just like the Honda Civic, Mazda3 and Hyundai Elantra, and not B-segment models such as the Toyota Vios or the Honda City.
Design wise, Proton has done a good job with the Suprima S. The black front honeycomb grille, redesigned front bumper, the rear bumper with integrated brake lamp and 17-inch wheels give the car a much sportier appearance than its sedan sibling.
Interior layout is identical with the Preve, except for the new seven-inch LCD screen which is part of the new Android based infotainment system which features Wi-Fi technology, DVD playback, Bluetooth connectivity and satellite navigation. According to Proton, the Suprima S is the first car in Malaysia to come with the Android infotainment system.
Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) level has improved. Besides that, the cabin is identical with the Preve Premium, featuring seats, steering wheel and centre-console that are clad in leather. It is said that new materials were used to build the dashboard, levers and buttons.
Although they looked good and felt more solid than the ones in the Preve, they still felt a little plasticky.
As much as ride and handling is concerned, the Suprima S comes with a Lotus-approved, performance-oriented suspension set-up that is slightly firmer than the Preve. Bumps, lumps and potholes were tolerated respectably and body roll was kept minimal when we drove the car through a mini slalom course. In our opinion, this is the Suprima S' main strength.
While driving the Suprima S, we noticed that the engine noise has decreased significantly, thanks to the tweaked engine control unit (ECU) and transmission control unit (TCU). The infamous CVT "rubber-band" effect was still noticeable though. Besides that, things were fine and dandy.
Sharing the same wheelbase length with the Preve, there was more head and leg room than we could ask for.
Despite sharing the same engine and platform as the Preve, the Suprima S costs about RM7,000 more than the most expensive Preve because of the list of standard features offered. Besides the Android infotainment system, the Suprima S comes with six airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist, electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, two rear Isofix mounts, hill hold assist, park assist and even a reverse camera.
In all, the Suprima S may not be as refined or as powerful as some of its rivals, but looking at the features offered, we feel that it offers good value for money. Those who have been comparing the Suprima S with cars like the Vios and City should realise that it is actually a C-segment car that is priced as low as B-segment models.
